Regional President Speech
Cathy E. Minehan · President
Remarks by
Cathy E. Minehan
Stern University
MBA Admissions/Alumni Reception
April 2, 1997
I want to welcome all of you here this evening; for me it's a
distinct pleasure and honor to host fellow Stern School alumni.
One or two of you attended Stern when it wasn't called
Stern--it was just friendly old GBA, housed in a two-building
complex just south--or was it west?--of Trinity Church at the top
of Wall Street. Whether you were a full-time day student, or a
part-time night student as I was, the GBA education was first
rate. Classes included people who made a living on Wall Street
and who probed and questioned the ideas and methods presented
in class in ways that made the MBA curriculum at once richer and
more immediately useful. I, for one, never regretted the many
hours in the GBA library, the long, local subway rides home at
11 :00 p.m., or the difficulty in balancing an increasingly
demanding work and travel schedule with classroom attendance,
and--need I say it--the achievement of good grades.
I know the move to NYU's main campus, and the imprimatur
of the Stern name--along with other changes too numerous to
mention--have enhanced the School's quality and reputation and
added value to my degree. Nonetheless, I'll always have a fond
place in my heart for the old GBA, and regard it as one of the best
educational experiences of my life.
That is why when the newly formed New England Alumni
Association was formed in 1995, I was glad to speak at its
inaugural meeting. It was good to see that the old habit of close
questioning hadn't changed. Later that year, I spoke at the Stern
commencement--a rewarding and gratifying experience to say the
least. Finally, I've also begun to serve as a member of the Stern
Board of Overseers. This Board helps the School shape its
programs, policies and procedures. We want to ensure the School
continues to meet the needs of both a diverse business
marketplace and of a student body that is entering the intensely
competitive and global business world.
I know all of you have been involved with Stern over the
years as well. Thank you for that and for coming here tonight.
All of our efforts help to enhance the reputation and the
prominence of the Stern School here in New England.
