Regional President Speech

Remarks by Cathy E. Minehan President, Federal Reserve Bank of Boston University of Rochester Reception April 1 , 1996 Thank you all for coming. My name is Cathy Minehan. I'm President of the Bank, but more importantly for these purposes, a Trustee of the University of Rochester. I'd like to welcome you here to the Bank this evening. This is an opportunity for our still new President, Tom Jackson, to tell you a bit more about what I think are tremendously exciting plans for the University--and, specifically, for the College of Arts and Sciences. These plans were long in the making, and the Trustees believe that they represent a tremendous opportunity for the University in general and the College. You all received Tom's letter at the end of last year to alumni, soon after he announced the Rochester Renaissance Plan. He discussed how that plan will have a positive and far-reaching effect on the University. In my view, anyway, this is a plan that will renew the College's commitment to the highest level of excellence, focus its efforts on its core competencies, dramatically intensify its commitment to undergraduate education, and return the University to the close residential community it was at least when I was there. Like almost anything that is bold and visionary, the plan has its controversial elements. But I can tell you that the trustees, to a person, are solidly behind this plan and behind the President, his Provost, and the College Dean, the other principal members of his team. We also know that it will take the entire University community to help make the plan work--which is why we hope that this session will answer any questions you may have. Tom --
