Regional President Speech

Monroe Kimbrel · President
Welcome, Fellow Alumni ! As President of the University of Georgia Alumni Society, wel coming new members is particularly pleasant for me. Obviously, induction into the fellowship of the Society is consequential to the happy achievement of ea.ruing a degree from the University of Georgia. Let me add my voice to the chorus of congratulations upon your attain ment of both honors--that of graduates and alumni of the oldest state- chartered university in the Nation. You have entered, as new members of the Alumni Society, into a community of interest which had its beginnings in 1834. Since that time, thousands of alumni have experienced the same triumph you are celebrating today. Many of them, as members of the Society, have supported the administration and faculty of the University by giving of their resources -- time, talent, and money--to insure that this great school would continue to deserve a reputation for enlightened academic programs. Now, today, you have become members of that elite group, and upon you is falling a part of the responsibility for continuing the work of those who have gone before you, so that future alumni, coming along the same path after you, will enjoy the advantages of a superior education. Achievements of the several generations of alumni over the past 136 years have been considerable, but there can be no nresting on our laurels. ” We must be up and doing if we are to maintain and increase Digitized for FRASER http://fraser.stlouisfed.org/ Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis 2 - - the effectiveness of the Alumni Society. We need you. Feel sure that you are welcome. The Georgia Alumni Society needs many things from you: imagi nation, new ideas, energy, and leadership, to name a few. But two things needed most are enthusiasm and action. You no doubt recognize that enthusiasm can work for evil as well as good, and so it has, many times. Ours, however, is an admirable goal. Let us, you and me, become the catalysts, and by our enthusiasm inspire others to become interested in the work of the Georgia Alumni Society. Enthusiasm, almost invariably, except in the case of impractical dreamers, is followed by action. You have given me good reason to think that you are not impractical dreamers. After all, the success you are enjoying today is the direct result of action--plenty of action! I am sure you have your dreams, everyone does, but you know that dreams are illusions unless they are put into action. By action, I do not mean loud voices and angry disturbances, but good, constructive, imaginative plans and ideas and strategy. As you move into new ways of life opening to you, much will be expected of you. Many of you will find yourselves among the leaders serving on school boards, working on civic improvement commissions, Digitized for FRASER http://fraser.stlouisfed.org/ Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis 3 helping charitable organizations, campaigning for candidates in local, state and national elections, or just working in any way possible to chip away at the world’s stubborn problems. And this, of course, will be in addition to earning a living, which most of us have to do. Some where in all this activity, we hope you will spend a little of your enthusiasm and action for the University of Georgia. Alumni Society. So I propose to you: become enthusiastic about the Georgia Alumni Society; work enthusiasm up to such a pitch that action must follow; carry through until tha,t action becomes a. successful undertaking. Then, you will enjoy again that feeling of success, that medley of pride, humility, relief, and joy, such as you are no doubt experiencing today as you receive your diploma symbolizing a job well done. Again, my congratulations and very best wishes for your con tinued success. Digitized for FRASER http://fraser.stlouisfed.org/ Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Program President Fred C.
